The 2020 Stanford study covers 401 traditional search funds in the United States and Canada through December 31, 2019. Aggregate pre-tax investor returns were a 32.6 percent IRR and a 5.5x return on capital. In 2018 and 2019, 88 funds launched and the median acquisition price fell to $10 million.
Owners and advisors can use the prices, hold outcomes, and seller facts when a search fund is the buyer. Investors can compare this vintage with later Stanford studies.
